PHILIPS WOUWERMAN (HAARLEM 1619-HAARLEM 1668)

The Hayfield

c.1660-68

RCIN 405334

Some labourers work to gather hay to be loaded onto carts and the barge on the left; others frolic or swim to cool off. Two falconers walk through the group on their way back from hunting. The silvery quality of the sky shows the artist experimenting in the ‘tonal style’, where atmosphere is suggested through subtly blended colours. Acquired by George IV in 1811 No. 5
