The Embarkation of Charles II at Scheveningen

c.1660-70

RCIN 404975

Lingelbach captures the pomp of the departure on 23 May 1660 of the restored Charles II from the Netherlands. The scene is shown from the high viewpoint of the dunes behind the beach, with the village of Scheveningen to the left. The numerous spectators have varied reactions including calm indifference, gossipy excitement and shock at the sudden noise from the gun salute. Painted for or acquired by Charles II No. 27
