CLAUDE GELLÉE, CALLED LE LORRAIN (1604/5-82)

Harbour Scene at Sunset

Inscribed 1643

RCIN 401382

This French artist settled in Rome by 1627 and, in contrast with many of the Dutch painters there, reacted to the city with wonderment. Here, he inserts ancient Roman landmarks into a romantic view of a harbour, and employs his excellent command of perspective to show the sun setting directly on the vanishing point. Probably acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales No. 30
