AELBERT CUYP (DORDRECHT 1620-DORDECHT 1691)

A Page with Two Horses

c.1655-60

RCIN 405319

The nobleman in this aristocratic scene, accompanied by a groom and an elegant black page, may be a portrait, but his obscured position behind a horse makes this unlikely. The expanse of Cuyp’s imaginary background suggests the beginning of a long journey south. Acquired by George IV in 1809 No. 41
