FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

View from the Ketschenbrücke, Coburg

1857

RCIN 2932762

This idyllic scene is one of the most attractive of Bedford's Coburg views, commissioned by the Queen in 1857 as a birthday present for Prince Albert, but it is less romantic than it appears. The wooden building (beyond the bridge) belonged to a timber yard, and on the right is the office of the municipal gas works, built in 1854.
