WILLIAM & DANIEL DOWNEY (ACTIVE 1860-EARLY 1900S)

Prince Leopold (1853-84)

March 1872

RCIN 2902587

This portrait shows Prince Leopold in the clothes worn at the Thanksgiving Service for the recovery of the Prince of Wales from typhoid fever, which was held at St Paul's Cathedral on 27 February 1872. The Prince is wearing the collars of the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Thistle, with Highland dress. He had a particular association with Scotland: one of his names was Duncan, and the Dukedom of Albany was conferred on him by the Queen in 1881.
