Mr John Moore and his wife Jane, married for seventy years

6 Sep 1894

RCIN 2911072

Queen Victoria kept an album of photographs of people who had accomplished unusual feats. The album includes eleven centenarians but Mr and Mrs Moore's achievement must have been even more rare. The couple came from Sussex and the photograph was sent to the Queen's Private Secretary, Sir Henry Ponsonby, by the Reverend Arthur Mackreth Deane, Vicar of Ferring, near Worthing. He explained that 'since I sent the photograph of John and Jane Moore, who have been married for 70 years, ... we have had another photograph of the old couple taken, and as it is so much better than the former one, I venture to send it for the gracious acceptance of Her Majesty.'
