The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, had been founded in 1682 by King Charles II, as a retreat for veterans of the regular army who were no longer fit for duty. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the hospital in 1840, and the Prince inspected the pensioners in parade in Hyde Park in 1847. The Queen maintained an interest in the hospital.
