MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (CAPRESE 1475-ROME 1564)

The head of the Virgin

c.1540

RCIN 912764

Inscriptions by the dealer William Gibson (1644–1703) can be found on 51 drawings now in the Royal Collection, all probably acquired by Charles II. The inscriptions give the name of the artist followed by a price code: the present drawing is inscribed on the reverse ‘MAngolo 1.4.’, indicating a value of one pound. It is probably a preparatory study for an unexecuted painting of the Virgin and Child.
