SIR PETER LELY (1618-80)

Mary Bagot, Countess of Falmouth and Dorset (1645-79)

c. 1664-65

RCIN 404958

This painting is one of a series by Peter Lely later known as the ‘Windsor Beauties’. These elegant portraits of fashionable women in loose, shimmering silks evoke the sensuous and opulent atmosphere of the Restoration court. Mary Bagot was suggested as a bride for the Duke of York after the death of the Duchess in 1671.
