GERARD VALCK (1651/2–1726) AFTER SIR PETER LELY (1618-80)

Louise, Duchess of Portsmouth

1678

RCIN 657497

The monarch and his court provided compelling subject matter for printmakers and their rapidly growing market. Particularly popular were prints of the king's succession of mistresses, who included members of the British and French aristocracy, but also actresses on the London stage, such as Nell Gwyn and Moll Davis. The prints were often derived from portraits painted by Charles II's principal painter, Peter Lely.
