The Thames regularly froze over during the seventeenth century and ‘frost fairs’ were held on the ice. Among the attractions were printing booths selling souvenirs, such as tickets lettered with visitors' names and the date. Charles II and his family had their names printed during their visit on 31 January 1684. Other souvenir prints surveyed the entirety of the fair, including this example which was produced as the ice thawed. Cat. 174
