On 8 May 1661, two weeks after his coronation, Charles II presided over his first State Opening of Parliament. This etching depicts the king crowned, enrobed and holding the orb and sceptre as the procession passed before Westminster Abbey. Jubilant spectators are depicted in every available space, with some even viewing the procession from the rooftops.
