John Ogilby’s lavishly illustrated book records the massive triumphal arches that he designed for Charles II’s coronation procession and the performances that took place as the king passed under each one. This engraving by David Loggan depicts the first arch, the decoration of which celebrated the monarchy. Charles II took a close personal interest in the publication and was undoubtedly aware of its importance as a written record of his magnificent coronation.
