The dowry of Charles II's queen, Catherine of Braganza, included the strategic port of Tangier, on the coast of Africa at the entrance to the Mediterranean. The surveyor, Jonas Moore, was sent to survey the territory and design improvements to its harbour. His work was subsequently translated into this impressive map by Hollar, dedicated to the king and queen. Reporting to the Committee for Tangier after his return, Moore stated that Tangier was ‘likely to be the most considerable place the King of England hath in the world’. However, the colony proved to be a huge drain on the nation's finances, and was abandoned in 1684.
