The magistrate, Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey, mysteriously disappeared on 12 October 1678. Five days later, his lifeless body was found in a ditch on Primrose Hill. Catholic plotters were quickly blamed for Godfrey's murder as revenge for his involvement with Titus Oates in the so-called Popish Plot that became an anti-Catholic campaign. In this broadsheet Godfrey and Charles II are depicted in the centre, surrounded by scenes from the Popish Plot.
