The Quadrangle looking west

c.1765

RCIN 914560

Windsor Castle is divided into three principal parts, or 'wards'. The Quadrangle of the Upper Ward is bordered by the State Apartments. Unlike today, the Georgian Royal Family did not live in this part of the Castle, and the Quadrangle was open to the public. The statue of Charles II on horseback was moved nearer to the Round Tower in the nineteenth century.
