PAUL SANDBY (1731-1809)

The Lower Ward seen from the base of the Round Tower

c. 1760

RCIN 914559

Taken from the top of the mound, the tiny details in this view include a sign on the right advertising refreshments at a public house called the Royal Standard within the Castle precincts. Thomas Sandby made many panoramas, sometimes with the aid of a camera obscura or optical device, and probably collaborated with his brother in this work.
