The Henry VIII Gateway from within the Lower Ward

c. 1767

RCIN 914550

The Henry VIII Gateway has been the main entrance to the Castle since the sixteenth century, leading into the largest of the three wards. At this date, the rooms above the gate were used as a debtors' prison. An inmate can be seen at the window at top right, lowering a bucket in a plea for sustenance.
