PAUL SANDBY (1731-1809)

The ascent to the Round Tower

c.1770

RCIN 917876

This watercolour shows the long flight of enclosed stone steps to the Round Tower that visitors were able to climb to admire the spectacular view. Tours of the Tower still take place, weather permitting, during the summer months. Sandby positioned himself at the bottom of the steps to create a dramatic rising perspective.
