CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

4: The Grand Canal looking west from the Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi towards San Geremia

c.1727

RCIN 406982

Canaletto has eliminated the curve to the left of the bank to make the buildings more visible. Many aspects of daily life are represented, from the ships of commerce outside the Fondaco dei Turchi to the washing hung out on the Palazzo Tron, to the soberly dressed gentleman about to leave the Palazzo Vendramin, watched by figures at the windows above.
