CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

The Campanile under repair

c.1745

RCIN 907426

On St George’s Day 1745 (as noted by the artist at upper left), the famous bell tower of San Marco was struck by lightning. Canaletto’s drawing shows the repairs being carried out on the tower. He rarely used his sheets of paper in a vertical format, but the massive structure of the tower demanded that he utilise the full height of the sheet.
