CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Capriccio View of the Courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale with the Scala dei Giganti

1744

RCIN 406012

Elements of the actual Palazzo Ducale have been included with the capricious. The viewer sees the staircase installed by Antonio Rizzi in 1497, and the enormous statues of Mars and Neptune by Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570). Above the right arch of the staircase is Canaletto’s coat of arms which combined with his signature, suggests that he was particularly pleased with this painting.
