Canaletto (Venice 1697-Venice 1768)
The portico with the Lantern c.1740
RCIN 807797
Canaletto’s etchings also included invented subjects, or capricci. This scene is taken from under the arches of a portico. Canaletto focusses on picturesque details: elements of daily life such as broken planks, overgrown foliage and a hanging lantern contrast with the great ruined monuments beyond.
