CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

The Nave of San Marco looking East

c.1755-6

RCIN 400575

This view towards the high altar of San Marco seems to record a special occasion: the Doge’s coats of arms decorate both sides of the nave, candles along the top of the rood screen have been lit, garlands hang below and the nave is filled with kneeling worshippers. This is one of Canaletto’s last works commissioned by Joseph Smith.
