The Arch of Septimius Severus

1742

RCIN 400700

The Arch of Septimius Severus was erected in the Roman Forum in AD 203. Debris and silt from the surrounding hills gradually built up so that the column bases were buried and the two minor arches blocked up. The raised height enabled visitors to study the sculptural details more closely.
