CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Ruins of the Forum looking towards the Capitol

1742

RCIN 400714

This view is towards the Capitoline Hill and the Palazzo Senatorio. In the foreground are the three remaining columns of the Temple of Castor and Pollux and beyond is the Temple of Saturn. It is based on Canaletto’s own youthful drawing, converted from a horizontal to a vertical format. In contrast to the visitors marvelling at the ruins, the local inhabitants seem to go about their daily lives unaware of the greatness of Rome’s past.
