LUDOVICO ARIOSTO (1474-1533)

Orlando furioso

1772

RCIN 1122680

Ariosto’s romance on the travails of the Saracen knight Orlando, desperately in love with the princess Angelica, was first published in 1516. Every single page of the richly embellished Zatta edition has a decorative border, with an illustrated plate at the start of each canto. The illustration for canto 44 shows the knight Ruggiero entering Marseille in search of his lover.
