New insight into Canaletto's working technique

Research undertaken in preparation for the exhibition Canaletto & the Art of Venice has shed new light on Canaletto's working techniques.  

It has long been thought that Canaletto used a 'Camera obscura'  to aid with preparation of his works.  However, newly taken infrared photography of six of his drawings of Venice, to be included in the exhibition, show meticulous preparatory lines laid out by Canaletto, which aided his seemingly spontaneous draughtsmanship.
