The boat leaving the dock at Dolo, a town on the Brenta canal, is a burchiello, a passenger barge that carried noble families up the canal to their summer residences. Canaletto shows the foreground in shade and the opposite bank with the tower of the church of San Rocco bathed in sunlight.
