Venice: The upper reach of the Grand Canal, looking south

c.1734

RCIN 907476

At the left, in shadow, is the convent wall of Corpus Domini. At far right is the corner of the convent of Santa Chiara, followed by the buildings lining the Fondamenta di Santa Chiara, few of which survive today; the view is now dominated by the multistorey car-park of Piazzale Roma. In the foreground a sandalo is being rowed at unusual speed, leaving a strong wake.
