CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Piazzetta, looking towards Santa Maria della Salute

c.1723-4

RCIN 907445

To the left is the column with the bronze Lion of St Mark, to the right the Libreria, and in the distance the church of Santa Maria della Salute. Canaletto has eliminated the column of San Teodoro, which should be seen against the façade of the Libreria. The figures that are prominent in the corresponding painting are barely indicated here, little more than a single scribble hunched at the base of the column.
