CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Piazzetta looking south

1729

RCIN 907441

The drawing combines views from two different points in front of San Marco, looking down the Piazzetta towards the Bacino. To the left is the end of the narthex of San Marco and the façade of the Palazzo Ducale; to the right, the Loggetta of the Campanile and the façade of the Libreria. Between the columns is a view across to San Giorgio Maggiore. Canaletto drew this view of the Piazzetta surprisingly rarely, and never painted it.
