CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Molo looking west

1729

RCIN 907460

The view looks west along the waterfront of the Molo. Following the column of San Teodoro at the right is the Libreria, the Zecca (the mint), then the broad steps of the Ponte della Pescaria, the site of a fish market whose awnings Canaletto indicated with a series of horizontal scribbles. Behind the bridge is the huge brick building of the state granaries, demolished during the Napoleonic occupation. At the far left is the mouth of the Grand Canal.
