CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Libreria, Campanile and Piazzetta from the east

c.1740

RCIN 907438

The east façade of the Libreria is drawn in a simple elevation. To this Canaletto added at the left a view to Santa Maria della Salute, as if from the south end of the Piazzetta, and at the right a view into the Piazza, as if from the north end of the Piazzetta. This combination of different viewpoints has the effect of greatly expanding the apparent size of the Piazzetta.
