CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Libreria and Molo

c.1734

RCIN 907439

This view can be obtained by standing at the edge of the Molo before the centre of the Palazzo Ducale, whose corner lies just beyond the right of the composition. Canaletto recorded the architectural details of the Libreria accurately, though the lantern of the roof confuses the outline of the lion on the column. He opened out the perspective of the façades further along the Molo, exaggerating the width (impressive enough in reality) of the Granai.
