CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: the Grand Canal from Campo S. Vio towards the Bacino

c.1727-28

RCIN 400518

The Campo San Vio opens on to the Grand Canal a hundred metres east of the Carità. This view is impossible from the narrow campo – Canaletto expanded the foreground and incorporated a view of the right bank taken from a little way into the canal. The right side of the painting is taken up by the flank of Palazzo Barbarigo, with the dome of Santa Maria della Salute protruding above the palazzi beyond. The left bank of the canal is dominated by Sansovino’s Palazzo Corner della Ca’ Grande.
