CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: Piazza San Marco, looking north-east from the Procuratie Nuove

c.1745

RCIN 907427

Canaletto has dramatically enlarged the size of the arches under the Procuratie Nuove – they are in reality no more than 3m (10 ft) wide, and he ‘removed’ a pillar to allow a view both into the Piazza and down the arcade. This is a fine example of Canaletto’s late style, dominated by heavy pen-work, looping figures and a rather artificial overall feel, which was to alter little over the last two decades of his career.
