CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo

c.1735-40

RCIN 907481

At the centre is the ornate façade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, now part of the city hospital of Venice. To the right are the huge gothic church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and Verrocchio’s equestrian monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni (d.1475). The scene has barely changed in five centuries. Canaletto rendered ‘invisible’ the buildings that rise from a line corresponding with the lower edge of the drawing, to take in an angle of some 120° without resorting to extreme perspectival effects.
