CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Piazzetta looking north

c.1723-4

RCIN 907443

The Piazzetta (‘Little Piazza’) runs from the Piazza San Marco, between the Palazzo Ducale and the Libreria, to the waterfront of the Bacino. To the left is the Libreria, the library of San Marco, its east front in deep afternoon shadow cutting across the Campanile. In the distance is the clock tower, the Torre dell’Orologio, and at the right the façade of San Marco in steep perspective. Canaletto moved to the right the column of San Teodoro, which should stand in the middle of the composition.
