CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Bacino looking west from San Biagio

c.1735-40

RCIN 907455

The drawing is based on the previous sketch, with the boats rearranged and the Campanile moved to the right. There remains a spatial discontinuity between the Forni and the buildings beyond, making it appear that the Riva stepped back at that point. The style of the drawing is that of a decade later than the sketch – Canaletto often based the composition of a finished drawing on a work of several years before.
