CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Trees on the shore of the lagoon

c.1740-45

RCIN 907495

The drawing is unusual both in the detailed depiction of a natural feature and in the extensive use of red chalk. The chalk element may have been executed in the open air, worked up later with pen and ink to give the trees an imaginary setting, including a distant view of the lagoon.
