CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

A capriccio with a fountain on the shores of the lagoon

c.1740-45

RCIN 907537

The fountain is more like the huge granite bowls familiar in Rome than anything to be seen in Venice, with Canaletto’s chevron coat of arms on the supporting pedestal. Beyond are a few fishermen on the shores of the lagoon. The various motifs seem barely connected, and it appears from the minimal pencil underdrawing that Canaletto put the composition together with little deliberation.
