CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

A capriccio of a ruined arch on the shores of a lagoon

c.1740-60

RCIN 907533

The arch appears to be imaginary – while its proportions echo Roman arches, the details are a confection of classical and renaissance motifs. To the right the view opens onto the lagoon, with a domed church on the horizon.
