CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

A capriccio with Santi Maria e Donato, Murano

c.1740-60

RCIN 907493

The drawing is a variant of the previous sheet. Canaletto transformed the church, retaining only the arcaded apse and changing all the details into the language of Venetian gothic. A circular mausoleum now stands in the enlarged space beyond the church. The mannered penwork indicates that this is a late work, probably executed many years after the original pen drawing.
