CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Piazzetta looking south

1729

RCIN 907441

Canaletto made many drawings of Venice. Here he shows the main square in front of the Basilica of San Marco, looking out to the water or Bacino beyond. In the later 1720s there was great demand for his paintings, and loosely-drawn sheets like this helped him to put together ideas for his painted compositions.
