SEBASTIANO RICCI (BELLUNO 1659-VENICE 1734)

The head of Simon the Pharisee

c.1728-30

RCIN 907134

A preparatory study for the figure in Sebastiano's painting of the Magdalene anointing Christ's feet. Sebastiano focuses on Simon’s expression of disbelief and horror as Christ allows himself to be anointed by Mary Magdalene, reputedly a prostitute. This is the largest painting in the set owned by Smith and now hangs at Hampton Court.
