A Regatta on the Grand Canal

c.1733-4

RCIN 404416

The Regatta was held annually on 2 February, and a race of single-oared light gondolas is underway. Spectators cheer them on, many in elaborately decorated ‘bissone’, the eight-oared barges belonging to prominent Venetian families. On the left is the ‘macchina della regatta’, a temporary floating pavilion, which marks the finishing line.
