The Prince of Wales climbed to the roof of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali to admire the view across the city. He wrote in his journal, ‘we had a splendid view of the town & country & the Pyramids in the distance fr. the roof’. Here Bedford includes the Mosque of Sultan Hassan, built in the mid-fourteenth century. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
