The yacht at Ithica [HMY Osborne, Ithaca]

2 Jun 1862

RCIN 2701024

After leaving Athens on 31 May, the Royal Yacht stopped at several Greek islands on the way to France from where the Prince would travel overland to Britain. On Ithaca, the island said to be the homeland of Homer’s Odysseus, the Prince visited the Cave of Odysseus. Here Odysseus was supposed to have slept after his return to the island, following the Trojan War and his ten-year absence. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
